Living Jazz (formerly Rhythmic Concepts), with the generous support of Target, will present “In the Name of Love”, the 10th Annual Musical Tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In honor of our 10th anniversary, the tribute has been moved to the historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Oakland.
In the Name of Love remains Oakland’s only annual non-denominational musical tribute to Dr. King. It is an extremely significant civic and cultural event for the city, bringing our diverse community together to pay tribute to Dr. King’s message of community, equality and inclusion. “In the Name of Love” showcases both international and local talent, children from Oakland public schools, local non-profits and businesses working to make a difference, and honors an outstanding humanitarian through the “Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award” presented by a prominent dignitary. The event embodies diversity, joy, and accessibility, and provides an intergenerational experience, using music at it’s core, to celebrate and honor the great teachings of MLK, Jr. Diverse members of our community leave feeling unified, inspired, and positive about our collective and personal potential.
Along with an extensive program, the MLK Tribute includes the Oakland Community Exhibition, a pre-concert event held in the Paramount’s lobby, providing exposure to non-profits and businesses doing great work in the Oakland community.
In 2012 we will feature the illustrious Grammy Award Winner Mavis Staples; 4th runner up on America’s Got Talent, the Oakland teen sensation Pop Lyfe,; the powerful 65-voice Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir; the renowned Youth Speaks; the Oakland Children’s Community Choir (OCCC); and the presentation of the Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award, chosen in conjunction with the Oakland Department of Human Services, and presented by a prominent dignitary.
OCCC, another Living Jazz program, is a free music education program provided free of charge for Oakland public elementary schools with little or no access to the arts. This will be the final showcase of their work with over 275 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders under the musical direction of Melanie DeMore.
Living Jazz is an Oakland based non-profit organization created in 1984. The mission of Living Jazz is to build community, cultivate creativity and enrich lives through the love of jazz. Living Jazz created Jazz Camp West in 1984, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir in 1986, Jazz Camp Weekend and the Oakland Jazz Choir in 1992, “In the Name of Love” in 2002, the Oakland Children’s Community Choir in 2005; Jam Camp West, a music camp for youth ages 10-15 in 2008, and Jazz Search West, the Bay Area’s First Annual Jazz Talent Search in 2010.
